Stitches and Craft

I love my job! Not only do I get to make stuff all day and work with ace designers and shop-owners, but I get to go to craft shows and design exhibitions in the name of work!

I spent all day Wednesday at the Stitches and Craft show in Melbourne and I would definitely recommend a visit if you are a crafter. I have shied away from this show in recent years as it was a bit old-school, but it has recently come under the wing of Living Creatively and was promising all sorts of hip crafty delights so I went over with two pals to check it out.

The staging of the show is awesome, with these giant-size craft installations and Jodie's amazing selvedge dress all on display.

I didn't have time for any of the major workshops but there are also 'craft bars' doted around the main hall where you can do a quick knitting, sewing, embroidery or paper project if you get the urge.

There is a big focus on thrifting and I really liked the Reconstruction Zone manned by Nikkishell where you can rummage about and make up some new garments from old ones.

And of course the chance to meet some blog friends at the 'Incubator' market...

Leslie from One Girl who was accompanied by her beautiful baby girl.

Dana from Twiglet. I couldn't resist buying this Lion cushion!

Liz from Betty Jo, whose stand looked great.

Johanna from One Red Robin.

Tinnie Girl (note to husband and any other potential Birthday gift buyers - I love her stuff, hint hint!!), Audrey and Maude, Jodie from Ric Rac, Kristen Doran and many others. I also met up with Angela, my lovely friend and travel pal who I haven't seen for what seems like ages. And gorgeous Michelle from Kids With Crayons. We were so busy chatting I forgot to take a photo of her stall but it looked perfect.

Best of all for me was seeing the Australian premiere of Handmade Nation, a documentary about the US indie craft movement, introduced by the director Faythe Levine. It's a really great documentary, especially if you are trying to make a living out of your craft.

There is also a large hall full of stands selling craft supplies. This was the downside for me. Almost all of the stalls are what I would call 'old school', selling glass beads, country-style patchwork kits, scrapbooking supplies, you know the kind of thing. I found only three or four stalls worth pausing at, the best being Kelani. Here I found loads of Australian designer fabrics, Aunty Cookie (in person), cute Heather Bailey patterns and heaps more.

It was interesting to see the mix of old and new crafters coming together at this event. We did hear a few of the older ladies grumbling that 'it's all gone downhill' but I think there are many more who embrace the craft renaissance and are excited by it. Personally, I think that if it gets people making stuff, it's all good! If you are in Melbourne this week, seriously, visit the show!

Hi Allison, I have craft show attendee envy. Being in Christchurch is just a bit far for me to travel to considering how many great things I'd find to buy there. I was sooooo hoping someone would post about the show with some great pics and words about the goods etc. Thanks heaps.

I missed seeing you yesterday, Allison. Glad you enjoyed and I totally agree with all your comments about the oldies having a grumble. I heard plenty of the younger generation saying how fantastic it was. They have lost some 'old' attendees, but I think that they have gained heaps of 'young' ones!

Great summary and fantastic photos and oooh look - there is one of me at the Craft Bar teaching people to stitch stitch stitch brilliant 'Sublime Stitching' patterns. So much fun, lots of lovely people having a go for a first time or for the first time in years. Glad you came along.

It was definitely a move in the right direction. Loved the incubator section and stopped to say hi, and also buy from, lots of lovely bloggers.
I even managed to fit in a few classes. Yes - lots of fun - and congrats to the new look and move toward current and more funky sellers.

Hi Allison,
It was great to meet you at the Show, and your positive comments about my stand were very much appreciated, so thanks heaps.
What a crazy experience it was being a part of Incubator.... which has been dubbed "The Great Wall" or "the left of centre" area by two attendees with opposing tastes!
