Day Out in Kyneton

We have a lovely girl called Tess working in our shop at weekends now, so we've finally been able to resume our Saturday morning drives around the countryside. Today we packed up the dog and kids and headed for Kyneton, which people are calling 'the new Daylesford' as it has a beautiful old street packed with new organic food stores, handmade shops, bakehouses, antique shops and galleries. It is such a vibrant place (did you see the review of Piper Street in The Age last month?). Lucky for us the Farmer's Market was on today so we wandered all around in the sunshine, stopping frequently for tasty snacks...

Kyneton is definitely worth a day out - do come on a Saturday, though, as a lot of the shops are closed during the week. The Farmer's Market is held on the second Saturday of each month.

On the way back home we stopped in awe at the Old Kyneton Hospital, which is currently for sale. A 17-room historic stone mansion. We imagined living here, making it into a beautiful house, staring out at the gorgeous view. Sigh. I heard that the asking price is $1.2 million - to put that into perspective for you Brits, that's much the same as our tiny Victorian house in Cambridge sold for! In Melbourne, the old 2-bed bungalow we rented in East Malvern in the '90s is worth more than this now. I think this could be a life's work for a dedicated family. Not us though, our feet are too itchy! x

My husband grew up in Kyneton. It's wonderful to see the town coming back to life after its bleak period.
Personally, I hope it doesn't become the 'new Daylesford'. One Daylesford is enough. To me Daylesford is like the Sorrento of Central Vicky.

Hi Spectator, thanks for the comment, I think you are right. Kyneton very much has its own identity, it is actually fresher and more real than Daylesford right now and I hope it stays that way! x

That sounds/looks like such a fun town and that old hospital would be so much fun to have. Wish I lived a little closer!

Kyneton is a great little town, good for your everyday bits and pieces and comes to life on the weekends. The Kyneton hospital is very grand and rumoured by the locals to be haunted! P.S I love your shopping bags
